It’s no secret that Scotland, like the rest of the UK, is not necessarily known for its food. So admittedly, I went in with pretty low culinary expectations. However, I definitely found some gems in our 4-ish days in Edinburgh, which was an absolutely gorgeous city, chock-full of castles, cobblestone streets, rolling green hills, and endless rows of bar/restaurants packed with people enjoying a pint in the nice weather. Everywhere we went had an incredible selection of whiskys, fish and chips, and, yes, the infamous haggis (more on that later).

Restaurant Review: Bryant-Lake Bowl
I’ll pretty much watch any show on the Food Network, but over the years, I’ve definitely developed a few favorites. Ina Garten’s recipes are always foolproof; watching Giada De Laurentiis cook in dangerously low-cut shirts never gets old (and her food is darn good as well). I love Chopped and old-school Unwrapped, but most of all, I love Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. Something about the passion people have for their little underground restaurants, the always delicious-looking and yet entirely unpretentious food, and the thrill of maybe recognizing one of the featured restaurants makes me tune in pretty much every time I see it on. Well, like, every time. For real. I can’t stop.
Restaurant review: Perennial Virant
Last weekend, Brad and I and a friend went to Perennial Virant, a cute little restaurant that is right up the street from us and, shockingly, we’ve never made it around to. Not only does the food always look delicious, but the head chef, Paul Virant, was awarded Food and Wine’s Best New Chef award in 2007 AND has been on Iron Chef America (vs. Morimoto, the coolest dude, no less). Again, why haven’t we been there yet? Finally, after the billionth time I’ve walked by during weekend brunch hours and been overcome with immense food envy, I decided the time had come to try it.
